Cannot sear meat or bring water to a rolling boil

by: ReluctantWhirlpoolOwner

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Moving into a new house which had this line of Whirlpool cooktop installed we found that it could not brown meat or bring water to a rolling boil. Whirlpool dispatched a technician who documented with a floating thermocouple that a larger burner barely brought 6 cups of water in a 14 inch pot to a temperature of 212 F after more than 20 minutes, with some areas measuring only 209 F. From a usability perspective, the unnecessarily high grates suspend the vessel too far away from the burners and much of the heat escapes and tends to cook the user more than the food. Sauces meanwhile burn at the pan perimeter. The phrase "back burner" captures imagery of simmering toward the rear and actively cooking toward the front of a stove, but this unit's higher-BTU burners are set to the back, and the smaller to the front. It's an embarrassment to the Whirlpool brand.

Not able to heat properly

Just moved to our new House and this Gas Cook-top come as part of builder's offering. I was impressed with clean look and simplicity to clean. But heating is too slow as grates are too high. Even to just heat up, it takes more than 10 min. This is not energy efficient. Also available space is too little and big burner are at back. Overall poor grate design. As we cook everyday it's going to be troublesome.

In Sufficient Heat, to small

We recently built a house and this cooktop was choosen by the builder. At first I loved how easy it was to clean however is is not great for cooking. I agree with all comments that the grates are to high above the burner and It would be nice is lower replacement grates were available. In addition the cooktop is to small for multiple pots/pans.

Works, but don't expect much

The biggest compliant I have is that the grates are way too high. And then the most useful burners (with highest heat) are in the back where it is most inconvenient. It's like this was made for someone who doesn't actually cook. Even with the highest heat setting, the temperature doesn't seem quite got enough, again, probably because of the grates being so high up from the burners. There also doesn't seem to be enough space for multiple pots and pans to be used at the same time, but it might be mostly because the cooktop is relatively small to begin with rather than it being a fault of the cooktop itself. The upsides are that this cooktop looks pretty nice, quality seems decent, and it's fairly easy to clean. The burners light up pretty quickly and they just work (though not spectacularly). Overall, I wouldn't buy this cooktop. If I was looking for something inexpensive, this doesn't fit the bill and it's performance is very unimpressive for the price. I was unfortunate that this was the standard cooktop included in my houses' new build. I'm now considering upgrade my cooktop to something more usable.

Searching for Suggestions....

I love gas cooktops and have used them for nearly 30 years. We waited for years to upgrade to this model and shopped around for several months before purchasing. We've experienced the same disappointments others have mentioned: inability to use all burners at the same time, and lowest temp settings not being low enough for some food prep. Recently, though, we've encountered a safety issue. The left rear burner takes a really long time to light. By the time it ignites, the kitchen smells so strongly of gas I have to open the doors. (The other burners still turn on with no problem.) Any suggestions you can offer to address these problems would be greatly appreciated.
